Why is algebra so hard?
The current algebra framework was designed about 100 years ago. At the time, society only needed the top few percent of the total student population to master algebra skills. As a result, the currently adopted abstract approach was the most efficient and straightforward way to deliver the content. If you happen to be one of the few whose brains are wired like that of the algebra curriculum authors or traditional algebra teachers, you can easily excel because teachers teach you the same way you learn. Otherwise, you are out of luck.
The current algebra curriculum was designed and is still being delivered for the few math-inclined students. It is not good or bad. It is simply just the way it is.
Times have changed. Today the demands in our workplace call for more advanced math skills. In response, schools have to implement "algebra for all." Now we have increased our expectations for schools, but still equip these schools with the same curriculum and teaching methods designed over 100 years ago.
